Chapter Sixteen: One True Thing

Viper showed up at the crack of dawn, and we exited the inn out into the early bustle of the market. We bought a few pastries at one of the stands already set up. They were doing a brisk business from both tourist groups and residents alike. The food was delicious, and with a cup of fresh squeezed juice from some Fae fruit, I was really pleased. I was going to be hard pressed when I got out of here to find food like this out in the normal world.

We headed towards the area of that big community bulletin board, where there were already many people milling about waiting for the new postings. Viper told us everything from workers needed to bounties are posted daily, as well as special sales and standard advertisements. No photos of course, the no tech rule was the norm. Things were mostly handwritten, with drawn pictures. Artists had a good business going in Fantasy Land.

There was a group of three, two large cave trolls and a woman with a sword, standing right in front of the board.

“They call themselves Slash and Bash,” Viper said. The trolls were at least eight feet tall and several feet wide, huge muscles and maces that were at least four feet long, with spiked balls on the end about as big as my head. “The one that is most dangerous is the woman,” continued Viper, noticing how I looked at the trolls. “They are one of the top bounty teams, specializing in violence and death. Her sword is said to be magic, and has been known to cut just about anything, including other swords and weapons.” I could feel my gift and my sword take interest at that comment. I knew they were not concerned.

“I've practiced against them in Faerie,” Ghost said. “They hire out as mercenaries quite often, hard to kill and very strong. Usually the best course of action is to run. Most people can outrun them easily, they are slow and not very bright. If you are defending territory and have to engage them, be prepared for a long fight where you just have to slice and jab them until they lose too much blood and energy to continue. One blow is about all they need to take somebody out. Sticking a sword or shield in front of one of those maces won't help. Of course, if you are invisible, things go a lot easier.”

We had almost reached the center square, and I could see articles of clothing out on many of the tables various vendors had set up, but my gift called me to a halt. To my left was a doorway in one of the wooden store fronts. Above the door was a sign that said One True Thing, and listed a price in Fae money.

“Can you tell me about this?” I asked Viper.

“It's like a fortune teller in the outside world,” said Viper. “I have heard the owner can touch you one time and tell you one true thing about your life that you don't know.
